Get well soon, Danny Baker

A south-east London blog can’t let this one go unnoticed – one of this area’s favourite sons, Danny Baker, has just announced he’s undergoing chemotherapy* after being diagnosed with cancer. He’s had a bit of stick from me over the years for his choice of the wrong SE London football club – then again, he is a Deptford boy – but he’s a man we can be proud of, with an awesome track record in music journalism before he moved into broadcasting nearly 30 years ago. Arguably his finest moment was the last interview with Michael Jackson before it all went, well, off the wall.

His BBC London show still draws a cult audience, and I only rediscovered his Radio 5 Live show last weekend. I joked to myself that he was taking this Saturday off to avoid talking to Charlton fan Glenn Tilbrook when he appeared alongside Squeeze bandmate Chris DIfford – sadly, the truth is was a lot more serious than that. He still lives a few streets away from here (in Kidbrooke, I believe), is still spotted regularly around Greenwich, and is by all accounts as decent a guy away from the microphone as his is behind one.

Get well soon, Danny – I hope there’s plenty more yarns and tall tales to come.

  1. Absolutely! Get very well, very soon, Mr. Baker.

Always listen to his show, even more enjoyable when the studio camera view is available on Freeview, and it is always entertaining.

    All the best to him.

  2. I’ve bumped into Danny Baker a couple of times at the Standard – a gent and the finest radio broadcaster we have. Best wishes to him for a full and speedy recovery.

  3. Danny you made me laugh on a Saturday morning & about football of which I know nothing ! 🙂
