Nick Raynsford on the Greenwich Foot Tunnel fiasco

It was a bit chilly last Friday morning when I was hanging around Cutty Sark Gardens with a microphone.

The plan had been to go into the depths of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel and record a piece for The Greenwich Podcast about the shambles surrounding its refurbishment.

Of course, the foot tunnel was closed. But when the foot tunnel is closed, there’s always cyclists riding up to it, and swearing under their breath when they find it’s closed. What we didn’t expect to find, though, was a passing MP – Nick Raynsford was wandering past.

Best go and have a word, then. He was there to check out the situation as well, as well as that with the mysterious development at Greenwich Pier.

“There’s a need for a great deal more information on all these works,” he told me. “Yes, the outcome will be fine when they’re completed… but in the meantime, but in the meantime, a lot of people are absolutely confused about what is going on.”

  1. Worth noting that Thames Clippers will start carrying bikes to/from Canary Wharf and Greenwich due to the ongoing problems with Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

    They tweeted yesterday: “Greenwich Foot Tunnel. From Tues 8th Feb we carry 10 bikes on board per boat. Please pre-buy tickets to board 1st. £3.30 one-way GW to CW.” (

  2. Whoa? Greenwich Printmakers “can see real benefits from the boutique hotel”??

    What – so Raynsford is now saying people like Greenwich Printmakers SUPPORT the hotel? Or are these just weasel words? We are all trying to move on here, and we need Raynsford to help ensure market traders and retailers are not pushed out by rising rents and reduced space, but it would help if he didn’t rewrite reality.

  3. Miles – thanks for the reminder, I forgot to put that in. It may well be that the stairs will be finished by then and work will be starting on the lifts.

    There’s a lot of anger on Twitter this morning about another closure of the tunnel which the council hasn’t informed people about. It’s not good.

  4. Please don’t forget the Woolwich foot tunnel is still closed as well. No word on that either.

As I commented over on the Londonist, I was down there just this past weekend to cover Woolwich for my blog, and the tunnel certainly didn’t look like it was about to get a grand reopening – in fact, apart from being firmly boarded up it didn’t look like anything was going on at all. According to the Greenwich website it reopens in March. I’ll believe it when I see it!
