Up, up and away on the Greenwich cable car

It was pretty quiet on Friday evening when I took a look; it was packed on Saturday and I’m expecting to see it rammed on Sunday, too. It’s fun, though, as if it’s been erected by the Cable Car Makers’ Association as a demonstration to make you think “wow, what could we do if this went somewhere useful?”

It’s nice to have the Thames Path back open again, although I do hope contractors Mace will be back to repair the damage to both the cycle path and the road surface at Edmund Halley Way.

PS. This is 853‘s 1,000th post. Something more reflective will follow – although not on this site – but for now, thanks very much for reading, contributing, and sticking with it.


  1. Agreed… cable cars between the Greenwich Peninsula and Isle of Dogs, and the Isle of Dogs to Rotherhithe Peninsula (to replace the Hilton ferry) would be great.

    By way of comparison, does anyone know what the foot tunnel between the Peninsula and the Wharf that was contemplated as one of the crossing options was costed at?

  2. I can understand why this would be redundant between the O2 and Docklands (ie. the existing Tube link is direct, quicker and cheaper) but do we know why this wasn’t built between Rotherhithe and Docklands?

    Did the Hilton ferry make it unnecessary (it’s not as if the ferry is at capacity!)? Were there planning issues?

  3. There should have been a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians built between Rotherhithe and Docklands by now. Unfortunately, Boris canned it.

  4. Just to highlight the uselessness of the cablecar, the Jubilee Line was down last night and my wife was told that she could get to North Greenwich (where she was parked) by the dangleway. So off she went only to find herself at Royal Victoria at 11pm at night and obviously the dangleway isn’t operating at that time of night and she’s there by herself in the middle of nowhere. Way To Go Boris.
