Residents of parts of east and west Greenwich can borrow electric bikes for four weeks for £10 as part of an anti-pollution drive.
If you live near Trafalgar Road or Greenwich town centre, you can take part in the scheme, with an option to buy a discounted e-bike at the end of the trial.
E-bikes contain a motor which helps propel the wheels. They are great for getting up hills, but the area covered by the hire scheme is flat and entirely at the bottom of the steep hill that runs down to the Thames.
Residents outside this area aren’t able to take part.
The bikes available for hire are rather swish – they include the £1,750 Raleigh Captus+, although it is possible to buy one from Decathlon from £600.
The project, which runs until March and is being run by the London Cycling Campaign for Greenwich Council, is part of the Low Emissions Neighbourhood scheme promoted by City Hall.
Greenwich Council is also backing the Silvertown Tunnel and London City Cruise Port, two projects which many fear will increase pollution in the area.
