Sainsbury’s scraps 33-storey New Cross development on Bakerloo Line site

Developers planned to knock down and rebuild the New Cross Gate Sainsbury’s. TfL wants the site for the Bakerloo Line extension

Plans for over 1,000 flats in New Cross that could have got in the way of the planned Bakerloo Line extension have been abandoned by developers. 
 
TfL is planning to extend the line from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via Old Kent Road and New Cross Gate.  

But A2Dominion and Mount Anvil, along with Sainsbury’s, applied to build a new superstore and 1,161 flats in towers reaching 33 storeys by New Cross Gate station – on the site earmarked for the Bakerloo Line stop. 

The existing supermarket, petrol station and three retail warehouses on site – Dreams, Harvey’s Furniture and TK Maxx – would have been knocked down. The developers suggested the Bakerloo Line station be built on a different site.

Now Sainsbury’s has said the uncertainty around TfL’s plans made progressing with the project “unfeasible”.
   
The spokesperson said: “As a partnership we worked very hard to produce a scheme that would regenerate the New Cross Gate community, delivering high quality new homes, a significant quantum of affordable housing, a modern flagship supermarket, and high calibre green spaces.

“We have always supported the Bakerloo Line Extension, however the uncertainty around its delivery has meant that progressing our project is unfeasible. We have therefore agreed not to pursue the application any further.”
