Work on creating the long-awaited segregated cycleway through Deptford is to resume on Monday after stopping in March when the coronavirus pandemic hit.
Construction started in Creek Road about a year ago but was paused when the crisis began, and Transport for London switched its resources to rolling out new temporary lanes elsewhere in the capital.
Now work will begin again on Monday on remodelling junctions at Deptford Church Street and Glashier Street, and across Deptford Creek Bridge at Norway Street in Greenwich, as well as created a segregated two-way route for cyclists.
Originally known as Cycle Superhighway 4, the route is due to run between Tower Bridge and Deptford Creek Bridge, and the first section as far as Rotherhithe Tunnel has already been finished. TfL says that details of work in Lower Road, Rotherhithe, and Evelyn Street, Deptford, will be announced in the coming months.
Nick Fairholme, TfL’s director of project and programme delivery, said: “Our work to transform roads between Tower Bridge and Greenwich as part of Cycleway 4 will make a real difference to people living in and moving through the area and I’m really pleased that we’re able to restart construction work on this important scheme at Creek Road. We’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum and I’d like to thank people in the area for their patience when construction work resumes.”

Work is also under way on an extension of Cycleway 4 between the Old Royal Naval College and Charlton. The first section, which involves creating a two-lane cycle route between Christchurch Way and the Angerstein roundabout, had been due to be completed in October, but has been delayed because of supply issues and a change to the plan.
Local MP Matt Pennycook said on social media earlier this week that the route would open on 18 December, and 853 is waiting for TfL to confirm this. The next section, from Anchor & Hope Lane to Charlton, is due to follow.
A further section to Woolwich is planned but has no funding; widened bus lanes have been installed in its place. TfL says it is monitoring the effects of the widened lanes on traffic.
Greenwich Council applied for funding to complete the middle section – from Deptford Creek Bridge to the Old Royal Naval College – in September; no announcement has been made on its fate.
